Realizations with Rena

What has Rena accomplished?

  • School Safety.  Students who don't feel safe have a harder time learning .  I have pushed for safer campuses in every aspect of learning.
  • Student Success. I am most proud of this success. By nearly every metric, we have seen some pretty significant growth in our student outcomes. This has been accomplished by working as a team with our stakeholders. By putting our kids at the center and listening to the people who have custody of them, we have been able to meet many of their needs that were going unrealized before. We still have a long way to go, but many of our benchmarks are rapidly approaching pre-pandemic levels.
  • Fiscal Responsibility. Budgeting during a time when we have declining student enrollment is no easy feat. But by utilizing my business skills as well as collaborating with my colleagues and stakeholders,  we have been able to make the necessary cuts to keep us solvent. We have been able to avoid layoffs and combo classes, while keeping and expanding Assistant Principals in the district.
  • Effective Solutions. While I was Board President, I was able to reduce the time of Board Meetings by 30% across the entire year. Our meetings became more productive, collaborative, and punctual.
  • Collaboration. Our children and their safety and future success should not be an adversarial process. We should all agree that we want only the best for our students by working together with teachers, parents, staff, administrators, and the community at large.   The future success of our students is paramount. When board members work together with respect for each other and the community they serve, our children's best interest is served. I've been able to bring much-needed civility to the Board.
  • Experience. My 30 years of experience as a Hispanic/General Marketing consultant for Fortune 500 companies gives me the unique perspective to understand the needs of our diverse communities in Vista. I also served as the President of the District Parents Advisory Committee (DPAC) and Cub Scout Den Leader for my son's dens, which gave me the skills and ability to work with the district and parents to find solutions that meet the needs of our students.
  •  Sustainability. As CFO of the newly formed nonprofit, Sustainable Schools of California, I am passionate about finding ways to make our schools more environmentally friendly while also cutting costs. In addition, there is additional funding from the government and other nonprofit organizations for programs like these. These funds might be able to free up valuable budget dollars for our schools that can go directly towards our students while also protecting the planet so they can have a sustainable future. It's a win-win.
  • Respectful Leadership. Board members have a responsibility to come to meetings prepared. This means that they have reviewed the Agenda items to be discussed, reviewed the presentation materials, contacted staff and asked all of their questions BEFORE coming to the meetings. It also means that they have examined the District Bylaws and understand that these meetings are mandated to end by 10:30 PM unless there is an agreement by the majority of the Board to extend that time to a specific ending time. This is so that members of the public don't have to make a choice between tucking their children in at night or having the right to address their elected officials. Because I understand Parliamentary Procedures, I will make sure that meetings are conducted with structure, decorum, and efficiency.
